The 3 Biggest Myths About Growing Old.
Do you know the 3 biggest myths about growing old?
People lose muscle mass and bone density due to the aging process.
This information was based on a study done on a sedentary group of older residents living in a nursing home. Since this was done around the time that soft bones (osteoporosis) were being noticed in the general population, it was herald as a valid study. Many later studies confirmed that it was invalid but the myth still persists.
The problem was the study was not done correctly. All valid studies have to include a control group.
This group doesn’t receive any variation of their circumstances. For instant, when a drug is tested the control group will be given pills that are the same size, color and shape as the test group(s). The only difference is the control group pills contains only sugar(placebo) while the other pills contain the drug being tested.
Since all test are less than 100% accurate, there are always some results that don’t fit into the normal pattern. The few healthy members of the group were thought to be in the percentage. The results of this study lead to the next general belief that was basically accepted.
Retirement is the time for slowing down and relaxing.
The work environment was different. The normal retirement age was 65. It was expected that older workers would retire leaving the younger people to advance.
Retirees would receive a golden watch to show their devotion to the company. Along with Medicare and a small pension, people would retire to a quite way of life focusing on hobbies or other things that were put off due to time constraints. Since it was a general belief that old age caused muscle mass and bone density lost it was completely natural.
It wasn’t until later when the Boomers challenged this belief that the thinking finally changed. Now many retirees are starting new careers or turning their work experiences into businesses to share their knowledge with others. Many new businesses appeared to help support this new trend.
The new era of the computer age has enabled many boomers to obtain such great success with this challenge. With so many new markets and industries opening up there are jobs for everyone. The problem now is how to fill these areas as the boomers retire. Many of the jobs require new skills which the typical learning
institutions struggle to keep up with.
I’m too old to start working on being healthy.
You don’t lose your health because of aging. It is usually due to the neglect of your body and failure to adjust your diet and routine as the body changes. This post will not focus on diet. The emphasis will be muscle health.
When you were working it was a “constant on the go routine”. Never enough time in the day to get everything done. That also meant you were moving and working your muscles without any conscious thought or effort from you.
In retirement, you slow down. Now is the time to relax and take your time to do things. You watch all those tv shows you have recorded, enjoy reading books from your list or just relaxing. You stopped moving and wonder why you start to wake up in the morning feeling stiff.
What is the real problem here?
During the day, you only move your muscles enough to keep them from hurting. You get tired if you do more than your normal activity. Then at night you sleep and there isn’t any muscle movement and deterioration starts. You wake up stiff and move a little less, starting the same cycle.
Then over a period of time you start to do less which leads to moving less. The muscles deteriorate and the aches start. Next you hurt so you need pain medication to do your daily activities. As you start to use more medication, side effects begin in the body. The end results your body is clogged with medication and you move less and less. Muscles deterioration accelerates.
The medical school of thought is to manage the symptoms not to address the cause. This results in a single system approach to the problem. The “new age thinking” views the person as a whole with inter-connecting systems, physical, mental and spiritual.
You have to begin in a mindset that you control your health challenges and not accept the old adage that aging or nature does. Muscles work when you move them. Neglect causes the muscle mass lost for healthy people. Of course, you may not be able to exercise your way to a 20 year old body but you can become strong enough to function more independently.
